Why your fire plate is warping and why it should be like this

Warum sich deine Feuerplatte wölbt und warum das so sein soll

Anyone who buys a fire plate is often faced with an unexpected observation during the initial seasoning: The solid steel plate changes its shape and bulges in one direction. But don't worry – this is not only completely normal, but actually a desired effect!

When heated for the first time, the material tension of the plate changes, causing it to permanently warp in one direction. Which direction this will happen is impossible to predict or influence in advance. With a bit of luck, it will warp directly downward, creating a slight depression in the center. If the warp goes in the other direction, you should turn the plate over after seasoning. This has the advantage that the fat and meat juices can run directly into the fire instead of collecting on the plate or dripping onto your feet while grilling. It also prevents grease puddles, reduces smoke development, and improves the grill flavor.

Important: Once burned in, the warping will remain—it won't go back. If your plate warps upward, you can simply flip it over after burning in.

Conclusion: Don't worry if your fire plate changes shape after the initial seasoning—this is completely normal and even desired! This will show you how it should sit optimally and improve your grilling results.
